      Fall 2019-Spring 2020 Musculoskeletal Applications Through Orthopaedic Practice

      Semester: Fall 2019 & Spring 2020 Class Location: 3100 Sycamore Road, Dekalb, IL 60115 Room 1029 Class Meeting Time: Fridays 7:00am-8/8:30am FREE CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS- 1.5 PER SESSION Parking: If you are not a student of NIU please park in the the visitor reserved parking spots at the NIU Health and Literacy Building. If all of those spots are taken, participants need to park in the metered parking areas (cost is $0.50 per hour). Goal: To present the basic concepts of musculoskeletal injury and disease in order to provide a framework for further knowledge acquisition during the clinical rotations. Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: ● Perform a basic musculoskeletal exam for the major anatomic areas – spine, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle, and foot. ● Recognize common patterns of musculoskeletal injury and disease utilizing history and physical exam, with application of clinical anatomy. ● Interpret musculoskeletal x-rays of common injuries, fractures, and degenerative conditions. ● Assess patients with overuse, degenerative, and traumatic problems and describe treatment options. ● Determine appropriate rehabilitation after injury/treatment and understand therapy modalities. Description: The course consists of weekly 1 - 1.5 hour classroom sessions. Unless otherwise indicated, the intended level of audience is ESSENTIAL. Faculty: Midwest Orthopaedic Institute Physicians/Staff Each course will represent 1.5 CEU credits for Athletic Trainers and Physical Therapists.
