      THE BARBARA MORRIS GOODBODY COLLECTION

Exhibition Talk by Brenton Hamilton, Art Historian and Photographer
      Thursday, October 24, 6 - 8PM

The significance of any collection is its capacity to share, enlighten, instruct and reflect upon our society or perhaps even mirror the times of its making. As well as allow us to know the energies and force of the collector themselves. We know well, Goodbody’s devotion and championing of the arts in Maine and beyond, but it is her fine sensibility as a practitioner that informs this robust collection.
      Brenton Hamilton, Professor of Photography

Exhibition Catalog featuring 120+ works by world class photographers available for purchase. Sales benefit the Bertha Crosby Ball Center for Compassion at the University of Southern Maine.

Barbara Goodbody has long been a leader in support of the arts in Maine. Her collection reflects her commitment and dedication. Featuring some of the best makers in Maine, Santa Fe, Europe, and beyond, this compilation is idiosyncratic and optimistic and mirrors her world philosophy. It is also curious and egalitarian. Barbara values the artist as much as the product, and the monetary value, or, the prestige of a piece is not what compels her to acquire it. It’s the content of the work that matters to her most. Many of these pieces were worth far less when they were attained years ago. That said, there is a staggering amount of important and valuable photographs in the assortment.
Barbara didn’t intend to amass a body of images. She acquired works piecemeal over the last thirty years from friends, teachers, and mentors who influenced her own photographic journey. Last fall we began to catalog her accumulation, and at 147 images, I told her she had a significant collection that needed to be shared. She agreed, and after rounding up another sixty works, (we aren’t counting portfolios), we decided to exhibit a carefully curated selection and make this catalog. The citizens of Maine will be better for it.
