When Do No Harm is Harmful: Exploring the Emotional Side Effects of Medical Mistreatment

Emergent Hippie Artist Collaboration Series: Group Embodied Mindfulness Sessions with Mary Kalbach and Featured Guest Artists This workshop will give participants an opportunity to reflect together on works of art that dig deep into the long-term emotional effects of interacting with a flawed and often heartless medical system. We will explore the works of image-maker Jocelyn Mathewes, which reflect on her personal experience with the emotional complexities of various medical encounters. Our difficult emotions take up space in our bodies and our minds. Together we will look at Jocelyn's powerful images and search within our own selves for our personal experience echoed within them. If you continue to experience the emotional side effects of a medical experience, this group workshop is designed with you in mind! Come feel supported, heard and validated, while you take part in being a healing balm for others. Jocelyn Mathewes works in a variety of mediums, but youll catch her most often playing with photographys earlier ancestors. Her great love is cyanotype, one of the oldest and first photographic processes. Jocelyn lives in East Tennessee (alongside many other talented Appalachian artists) with her husband and three children. Her series on medical trauma which features images taken from actual EKGs and other medical tests will be the focus of this workshop. Mary Kalbach is a Post Traumatic Growth Coach, working mostly online with individuals and group experiences. She teaches embodied mindfulness and psychodramatic techniques to help her clients get to the root of their emotional distress and find release and peace. Her compassion and capacity to hold safe spaces make her group experiences intimate and personally connected. At the age of 4 Mary had life-saving open heart surgery. She experienced the emotional fall out of that experience well into adulthood and would like to bring this little-discussed form of trauma to light for all those with similar experiences. What others are saying about Mary's Embodied Mindfulness Group Experiences... " I've realized that I wasn't allowing myself space to feel my emotions. I got really good at dissociation and pushing hard emotions to the side over the years. I've come to see how unhealthy that practice was. (I was physically ill for years.) Realizing that those emotions that I didn't acknowledge or process was stored in my body and just reappeared as physical issues was life altering for me. Mary's circle is giving me new tools and ways to process and feel my emotions. Plus I have had a tendency in the past to isolate, so sitting in a circle with other kind souls that are supportive has been really helpful for me to push past my little comfort zone." Alicia H
